My Comic Collecting Path

Reader Stories: How Did You Start Collecting Comic Books

How I Pick My Comics

Some of that lately is decided for me in doing reviews and whatnot, but I choose comics for many reasons. Sometimes its the art or theme. Mostly its from names I know and trust.

How I Got Started

I got started collecting by following my brother. He got a few comics one time, an issue of Iron Man, Captain America, and something else I believe. Iron Man was ok, but Captain America captured my imagination. I guess I was looking for a hero or character I could look up to and in Captain America I found it. I started out by collecting just about everything he was in. The Avengers and West Coast Avengers, then branched out to other Avenger characters. Sometimes I would just pick out new issue number ones just to try them out. I haven't looked back and Cappy is still my favorite.

My Favorite Comics

I read a lot of comics. Some for work and don't necessarily seek them out, but hey, it could be worse right?

I love Walking Dead. It is a gut wrenching story that keeps me coming back month after month. I have also been enjoying Sweet Tooth, another post apocalyptic tale. The latest Hellboy series has been very well done and I was really digging The Immortal Iron Fist. Captain America will always be my favorite, but I have had a hard time with Cap being "killed" and Bucky taking his place. Cap will always be Steve Rogers to me and that whole transition just made me grumpy. I know Steve's back and all, but I just felt a little betrayed. I'll get over it.

Lately though, I find myself drawn to trade paperbacks and more independent titles. I'm a bit tired of the hype of mainstream comics and just want a good story without the crossover.

Advice

  • Don't be afraid to try new things.
  • There is a comic for everyone.
  • There are comics for kids, you just have to know where to look.
  • Comics awoke a passion for reading in me and they might in you too.
