Story:

Wanted is the story of Wesley Gibson, a panic attack driven loser who lives his life in upset and squalor. He loses most everything, his self-respect, his girlfriend, and almost his life to his worthless self-depreciating ways. He is plucked out of his world of misery by a fraternity of assassins who know who Wesley really is – the only one who can stop the world’s greatest killer of them all.

Movie Review:

Although I liked the spectacle of this film and felt the action sequences were good, the overall differences between this movie and its source material gave me too much of a problem to enjoy it fully. One of the main points of the comic was that the power Wesley is given is used to fulfill his every want and desire, but philanthropic work to save the world. I know the comic ends up having him take up the roll of “hero” but that is a poor descriptor of the comic book character. Even thought I didn’t care for the movie all that much, I tried to look at this DVD with fresh eyes.

I was really hoping this DVD set would follow in the lines of the Iron Man and Hellboy 2 DVD releases. Those DVD’s have been pretty packed with some great bonus features that lasted for hours of extra entertainment. Not so for the Wanted DVD 2-Disc set.

The single disc has just the movie, a scene selector, and some bonus language features. One of the more interesting items was the DVS Descriptive Video Service 2.0 where a narrator describes the non-verbal parts of the movie. There are some rather…humorous parts when described out loud. That is a sad statement to say about this disc. There should be a lot more, commentary, deleted scenes, even a special feature or two. That was one of the big things I liked about the Hellboy 2 single disc DVD – how much they actually put on it. By itself, this DVD wouldn’t be the best buy.

The second disc does have some nice features though. I liked the feature on brining the comic to life with interviews of the cast and writer Mark Millar. It was cool to hear about how the production team went back to the comic for insight into how people would speak or act in the Wanted universe. I personally wish more of the comic was translated, but C’est la vie.

The special effects feature was also very enlightening and I got some interesting insight into how the slow motion features are done and how the wax baths were one of the harder special effects to pull of correctly. It does give some great appreciation into the movie making process. Timur truly is a visionary director with his own sense of style and film making.

Conclusion:

As with the movie, I was also disappointed in the DVD. The screen menus were basic, the single disc content was nonexistent, and there were some missing key features such as some kind of commentary. With the special codes that play at the end of many of the features for the upcoming video game and a feature and preview of the game, it almost felt like the Wanted DVD was more of a game commercial than a true DVD package. The special features on the second disc were good, but with only about an hour of content, it would be hard for me to shell out the suggested retail price for this set. If you really liked the film, then I think you’ll like the set, but if you haven’t seen it or are on the fence, be warned, it is a bit skimpy.
