The Transformers has typically been an all ages book.

Summary:

The Transformers comics have been around for over twenty years now spanning three different publishers. What follows is a highlight of The Transformers titles starting with the most current comics from IDW Publishing.

Most of the titles, except for the original Marvel series, are small mini-series, so if you are looking for a Tranformers comic and are worried about jumping into the middle of a series, I’m sure you’ll be able to find the earlier issues fairly easy.

IDW Publishing
Transformers: Movie Adaptation – This is the official adaptation of the Michael Bay movie. It retells the story that is based on the script from the motion picture, but has extra material including interviews with producer Tom Desanto and comic book writer Kris Oprisko. There is also extra information about the video game, art, pin-ups and other material.

Transformers: Infiltration – This is the first series that IDW came out with based on the Transformers line. It is a retelling of the origin story of how the Transformers came to Earth and are battling each other for control. Watching them is a government organization called The Machination, which wants the technology the Transformers possess. The series continues in Transformers: Escalation.

Transformers: Escalation – This series continues the story set out in Infiltration (See above). Megatron is working to cause discored amongst many nations by staging attacks and helping opposing sides attack and destroy each other. The government agency known as The Machination seems to be working to make copies of Tranformers based off of Sunstreakers body. The series concludes in a giant battle in the country of Brasnya with Megatron and Optimus Prime going toe to toe.

Transformers: Evolutions Hearts of Steel – This is the first in a series set outside of current continuity taking place during the American Industrial Revolution. One of the main characters is the African American folk hero John Henry. The series sets out to answer the question, ‘Ever wondered what form your favorite Transformers would take if they existed in different eras?”

Dreamwave Productions
Transformers: Generation One – This Transformers tale takes place after the continuity set down by the cartoon and previous Marvel comic. In it, the Autobots attempt to leave Earth and head back to Cybertron in their spaceship, the Ark II. It is destroyed in their first flight and the transformers, both Autobots and defeated Decepticons imprisoned inside are seemingly destroyed. They were merely captured, and are being controlled by new technology. When Megatron breaks free and creates a virus that converts organic matter into technology, the rest of the Autobots must band together again to defeat the Decepticons and rogue military agents.

Marvel Comics
The Transformers (Generation One) – This was the original series that although started on a parallel course of the cartoon, soon veered off to create its own stories. The comic series tales the original tale of the Autobots and Decepticons and their battle on Earth and amongst the stars. Although the series was at first slated to be a four issue mini-series, it didn’t end until issue #80.
