Started in 2005, Wonder Woman Day is an event that has grown to be hosted at two locations and has raised over $69,000 dollars in total for local shelters and domestic violence related charities. Started by comic writer, novelist, and DVD documentary producer/writer Andy Mangels, who says, "Especially in today’s political and economic climate, we need a symbol of peace, strength, equality, and honesty,” Mangels says, “and Wonder Woman embodies those qualities. For over sixtyfive years, her mission to promote those ideals has been detailed in comic books, novels, and television shows. The Wonder Woman Day events give fans and the general public an opportunity to celebrate the character and the people who create her adventures today, as well as to see and buy some incredible artwork — from generous and talented comic book and animation artists all over the world — showcasing the 'Amazing Amazon,' all while raising money for four incredibly important charitable organizations."The event showcases two day-long events where fans can visit two comic shops and meet comic book artists, take pictures with costumed heroes, partake in a raffle, and bid on some fantastic comic book art. All of this is designed to raise awareness about domestic violence, which Jessica Elkin, director of the Raphael House in Portland, Oregon says, “This event also raises awareness that is critical to prevention and education, the key to ending domestic violence."
The event continues to grow each year and through has continued to see success in helping those in need. Portland Mayor Tom Potter decreed October 26th the official “Wonder Woman Day.” This all coincides with the month of October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
