Comic Book Creating Resources For Inkers

By , About.com Guide

The comic book inker can often be looked down upon by other comic book creators. They have been called "tracers" and "printing preparation" but their contribution to the comic book process is actually quite high. The inker takes the rough pencil sketches and turns them into finished pieces of art, ready for coloring, lettering, and printing. Take a look at some of the top resources for inkers. Be sure to also check out the general comic book resources guide that has links to sites covering the whole spectrum of comic creation.

1. DC's Guide to Inking and Coloring Comics

This book is written by veteran comic book inker Klaus Janson, who inked Frank Miller on Daredevil and has recently done work on Batman and Iron Man. He is considered by many to be one of the best inkers of our time. This book is the latest in the DC's Guide books and will surely be a great resource for inkers.

2. The Art of Comic Book Inking

This book comes in two editions, with the second being the superior of the two. The second edition has more sections that came about when Gary Martin talked with other inkers new and old about the book and what else they'd like to see. Gary Martin is a writer, penciller, and inker of such comic books as Nexus and The Moth.

3. Inkers.ORG - The Blog

This is a blog of many different comic book inkers that has videos showcasing the skills of the artists, articles on the process of inking, as well as general thoughts on the inking process. It is an excellent resources that is just starting and will surely become better as time goes on. To be honest, I can't find any relationship to the forumthat is also named Inkers.ORG.

4. The Inkwell

The Inkwell is a group on Yahoo! It is a way for other inkers to offer and receive criticism, as well as discuss the craft of inking. You can fine line art (pencils ready to be inked) as well as images of finished inking. You will need a Yahoo! ID and permission to access the website, but the groups certainly seems friendly enough. Just click "Join This Group" and tell them why you want to join.

5. Inkers.ORG - The Forum

This is a forum for inkers that is in it's infancy. It is great because it is just about inking, with topics that range from techniques, to tutorials, to finding work. It looks to be a great resource for inkers to share ideas and learn the craft. To be honest, I can't find any relationship to the blog that is also named Inkers.ORG.

6. Meth Art

This site is the website of an artist named, "Meth." Although it may not be the best choice of names, it does have some handy tutorials on inking. The inking articles include information on digital inking, pens, cleaning, and cross hatching. Either way it should be an interesting read.
