Vitals:

Episode: Volume 1, Episode 14
Name: “Distractions”
Writer: Michael Green
Director: Jeannot Szwarc

Character Plots Advanced:

  • Peter Petrelli: Peter begins his training with Claude and is subjected to a hard dose of reality. Claude thinks that the reason he can’t control his powers is that he is too attached to his family. He takes Peter to the top of his girlfriend Simone’s father’s building to see her reconnect with Isaac.

  • In an argument with Claude, he is thrown off of the roof as Claude believes his body knows how to fly, he just doesn’t remember it. Peter crashes into a taxi cab thirty stories below, wreckage poking through his body. He miraculously survives, his body using Claire’s regenerative ability. Peter learns that he needs to remember what his experiences with other specials feels like and he can reuse their abilities.

  • Hiro Nakamura: Hiro’s father Kaito commands Hiro to return to Japan. It turns out the office that Hiro works at is owned by his father and if he returns, instead of working in a cubicle, will be made an Executive Vice President to take over the company as his successor. Hiro also has a sister named Kimiko that has been working with their father for some time.

Upon revealing Hiro’s different destiny, Kaito rips up the painting meant for Mr. Linderman, demanding that Hiro return. Realizing his father may lose his business if he does not return, Hiro convinces his father that Kimiko would make a much better successor as she truly knows the ins and outs of their empire.

  • Isaac Mendez: Isaac has started a new painting that shows a scene from the roof of Simone’s father’s building. The cityscape is shown destroyed. Isaac has also started using his powers without the use of heroin.

Desperate for help, Simone asks Isaac to help her find Peter. He reluctantly agrees.

  • Niki Sanders: Niki reveals that Jessica was the name of her sister and in the process of bringing out the Jessica persona to merge the two together, Jessica attacks and seriously injures the psychiatrist.

In a turn of fate, Niki is released, the charges against her dropped. It appears that Mr. Linderman pulled some strings to get her out, although it is unclear what Mr. Linderman will want in return.

Niki returns home to her son Micah, but it isn’t Niki that returns, rather, it is Jessica. Micah does not seem to able to tell them apart, as he used to.

  • Claire Bennet: Claire ditches school to go meet her mother in Kermit, Texas. There, she shows her mother her regenerative abilities and in return, her mother shows Claire that she can create fire.

In the final scenes, Claire’s mother Kimberly calls Claire’s father, saying that Claire had found her, although she had told Claire that she thought she was dead. It is revealed that Nathan Petrelli is Claire’s father.

  • Sylar: With the flick of a hand, Sylar turns on and off the lights in the cell that he imprisoned Mr. Bennet in. Using Mr. Bennet’s drivers license, he goes to their house and meets Mrs. Bennet.

Upon revealing that he is there to kill Claire, Mrs. Bennet tries to escape, but is slammed into the wall by Sylar’s telekinetic powers. Before he can kill her, Mr. Bennet and The Hatian burst into the room, saving her. Afterwords, The Haitian wipes Mrs. Bennet’s memory.

    Review:

This episode, like the last one, was a little slow, but also like the last one, had huge revelations. It seems that one of the things this series has going for it is its cliffhanger endings, making you craving the next week.

The revelations this week were rather huge, with the foremost being the revealing of who Claire’s birth father is. There were vast rumors that since we knew actor Eric Roberts had signed on for the show, that he would be a good bet for being Claire’s father. My bet now would be that he is going to be the mysterious Mr. Linderman, the mafiaesque character that is pulling the strings of many of the heroes lives.

  • Mr. Bennet and The Haitian

The true birth father is none other than senator hopeful Nathan Petrelli. It seems this guy gets around and the previews from next week hint at a reunion between this super powered clan. Although I doubt they will be anything like Marvel’s first family, The Fantastic Four, but one can dream.

With this revelation and others, this was a can’t miss episode.

    Major Revelations:

  • Mr. Bennet knows of Claude, calling him an old friend.
  • Isaac appears to be reporting to Mr. Bennet, helping him find Peter.
  • Nathan Petrelli is Claire’s birth father.
