Definition: Flash is a popular program put out by the company Adobe, which was orignially owned by the company Macromedia. Webcomic creators use the program for a variety of purposes.

One of the primary uses of Flash is in animation. This can be used to make whole movies in flash, such as from the site www.homestarrunner.com, or just an certain section of a site such as an animated ad. Some websites are even created solely in flash, but this seems to be less the case. A recent addition of the use of Flash is in playing real movies, popularized by sites like YouTube. The uses of Flash are many only being limited by your imagination.
