The Best Comics From Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day is a great day for comic book lovers. Who doesn't love free comic books? Some publishers offer samplers of whats to come while others offer key issues from series they are trying to promote. Some stores let you take as much as you want, while I've been to some that only let you get one! Which to choose? Take a look at some of my personal picks for this years Free Comic Book Day.

1. All Star Superman #1

Copyright DC Comics
DC's offering of the first issue of All Star Superman is very cool. This multiple Eisner winning series has had some delays, but has always been well worth it. Many of the stories are self contained in one issue, and Morrison and Quietly are really on a roll with what is becoming one of the ultimate Superman tales. Grab up this first issue if you haven't read it yet, and if you have you can nab this as a cheap way to introduce the series to a friend.

2. Hellboy

Copyright Dark Horse Comics
Hellboy: The Golden Army is just around the corner and it looks spectacular. This all new creation delves into "Hellboy's nightmares" and should have a lot of great material to prep you for the new movie. You'll also get a look into the B.P.R.D. series as well.

3. EC Sampler

Copyright Gemstone Publishing
Take a look at some of the comics that almost ended the comic book industry. EC was a fantastic line of comics in the 40's and 50's that delved into horror, mystery, crime, and other genres that pushed the boundaries of taste and helped flame the fire of "The Seduction Of The Innocent," the book that sought to ban comic books. This sampler collects many stories that include: "Al Feldstein’s 'Spawn of Venus' from Weird Science #6; Alex Toth and Harvey Kurtzman’s 'Dying City' from Two-Fisted Tales #22; Johnny Craig’s 'Curse of the Full Moon' from Tales From the Crypt #17; and Wally Wood’s 'Under Cover' from Shock SuspenStories #6!"

4. Neotopia

Copyright Antarctic Press
This might seem a little unusual making it near the top of a comic book list, but man, 168 pages! What a great way to check out a series or just enjoy a new comic. This collects the first three volumes of the Eisner nominated story. It's 168 pages...and its free...what more could you want?

5. Comics Go Hollywood

Copyright Two Morrows Publishing
This neat looking publication from Two Morrows Publishing takes a behind the scenes look at some of Hollywood's comic properties. With material from The New Frontier, Heroes, X-Men, and the upcoming The Dark Knight, this looks to be a very cool look into comic movies and a look into the editorial style of Two Morrows who has a great line of comic magazines and books.

6. Owly And Friends

Copyright Top Shelf Comix
I'm a sucker for Owly. He's cute, cuddly, and a lot of fun. Andy Runton has had a hit with this lovable character for all ages. This sampler has four tales in it, with stories from Korgi as well as introducing us to two new series - Johnny Boo and Yam. Check it out, it will take care of the kid inside you.

7. Impact Universtiy Volume 4

Copyright Impact University
Although I'm not really an artist, I love seeing all about the process. This comic will give you a taste of what's to come from Impact University and their series of products for the comic book artist. This series takes a look at science fiction and fantasy art.

8. Project Superpowers - FCBD 2008 Edition

This latest series from superstar creator Alex Ross gives an all new tale for Free Comic Book Day. This comic will help connect the dots between Project Superpowers #0 and the first seven issues. You can also get a preview of some of Dynamites other properties such as The Lone Ranger and Brothers In Arms.
