The Silver Surfer wields the power cosmic which was granted to him by the world eating Galactus. He is an extremely powerful being with amazing abilities that give him a near godlike status.

He is able to use the cosmic energies to shoot out powerful beams of destructive force. He can duplicate almost any form of energy and wield, view, and manipulate them as he chooses. This also makes him impervious to those energies as well, making him invulnerable to heat, cold, radiation, and many other forms. He can also convert matter into energy which he uses to sustain himself, making him independent of food and water.

The Surfer’s near indestructible body can survive indefinitely in space and can take immense amounts of damage. He is impervious to most forms of damage.

He has also used the power cosmic in different ways. He has used it to increase his strength, speak telepathically with other beings, heal, and even sense the future.

With his silver surfboard, he is able to travel at speeds faster than lightspeed, crossing vast distances of time and space. He is also telepathically linked to it, allowing him to control and direct it with his mind.

Interesting Fact:

In an unusual act of kindness, Galactus once recreated a destroyed Zenn-La, knowing that when the Silver Surfer finally quit being a herald, he would have a place to come home to.

Origin:

The Silver Surfer started out not as a pawn to a planet devouring creature, but on a utopian planet where there was no crime, hunger, disease, war, or want. He was born Norrin Radd and his planet was known as Zenn-La. While most of the populace gave into their every whim and desire, Norrin, was trained by his father to resist such temptations, and devote himself to the pursuits of the mind. He fell in love with a girl, Shalla-Bal, but the suicides of both his parents drove Norrin deeper into research, study, and history.

When the world destructor Galactus appeared, Norrin got ahold of a spaceship and approached the cosmic being, offering his services to find new planets that would satisfy the hunger this being in return for sparing his own planet. Galactus agreed and transformed Norrin Radd into the Silver Surfer.

As the Silver Surfer, he attempted to use his status as herald to select only uninhabitable planets for Galactus to feast upon. His master, through the power cosmic, knew what was on his servants heart and altered the Surfer’s mind, taking away the emotion that he had so he could focus on finding the richest of energies to devour. It was in this state that the Silver Surfer came to Earth.

The Fantastic Four were the first to clash with the Surfer and Galactus. All seemed lost as the Fantastic Four were thwarted at every turn. They found help in two unusual ways. The first was with the help of the Watcher, a race of beings who catalogue the universes happenings from a distance, never interfering but always watching. The Watcher guided the Human Torch, helping him find a device that belonged to Galactus himself, the Ultimage Nullifier. This device could wipe out all of humanity, even the universe itself.

They were also aided by the blind friend of the Fantastic Four, Alicia Masters, who was able to break through Galactus’ changing of the Surfer’s personality and brought forth his emotion. The Surfer turned against his master and aided the Fantastic Four in warding off Galacuts with the Ultimate Nullifier. Galactus agreed to spare the Earth in return for getting back his doomsday device. For his part in the plan, Silver Surfer was banished to stay on earth forever.

With the aide of the Fantastic Four, the Surfer was able to escape from Earth and travel through deep space. His adventures brought him to face the alien races of the Kree and the Skrull, as well as the demon Mephisto, who sought to gain souls from his homeworld Zenn-La. He later discovered that his homeworld had been destroyed by a powerful being called the Other, leaving him alone.

Recently, the Silver Surfer has rejoined with Galactus as his herald when his former master’s life was threatened during the Annihilation war between Annihilus’ forces and the rest of united space. After the event, which Galactus inadvertently helped bring an end to, he has resumed seeking planets for Galactus to take over and consume once more, a lost soul among the cosmos.
