Graphic Novel editor Jen Grunwald hosted the Mondo Marvel panel, which had Ed Brubaker, Robert Kirkman, Scottie Young, and Jeff Parker in attendance. Brian Michael Bendis was missing for the panel, who has usually been a stalwart attendee of Emerald City, but the panel moved on nonetheless.

The panel discussed many things in a very light-hearted manner, including the possibility of having rotating artists on the Uncanny X-Men and a potential new arc of Agents of Atlas. Through it all, the panel jibed with each other, Jen, and the questioners quickly showcasing the wit of those in attendance.

Robert Kirkman talked about his new MAX series, based on The Destroyer character, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The story will focus on the last days of The Destroyers life, when facing heart failure he decides to track down and kill all of the villains in his rogues gallery. He also talked about the new Killraven mini-series with artist Rob Liefield. One issue is in the can already with the second being worked on.

The topic of Captain America’s death came up, (sniff), and Brubaker talked a bit about his reasoning behind it. Having read the Civil War storylines, Brubaker quickly agreed with Captain America’s position, but knew of the inevitable end. Having just done a prison stint with Daredevil, Brubaker shied away from that. He also decided against having Captain America leave and “find America.” This is something I’m thankful for as it always seems Captain America is leaving to find America, only to find it overtaken by Nazis. Brubaker then said that he wanted America to find Captain America, and that they would need to lose him before they could. That was rather poignant, in my opinion.

Praise was rained down on Jeff Parker’s Agents of Atlas, with Parker notably excited about the Eisner nomination for the series. Scottie Young pantomimed having a hair full of face with his hand and said that awards were so “emo.” Parker noted that that was what people not nominated said.

The Iron Man movie, fresh on so many fanboy and fangirls minds came up, and Brubaker talked about how the studio execs in charge of the Marvel movies were very much fans of the source material, and he felt that we could look forward to more movies that were much more true to the source material, like Iron Man. This is something that really excited me, having really enjoyed the Iron Man film, and seeing the full slate of films planned for later on in the year.

When asked what characters they would like to be able to work on someday, Brubaker chimed in that he would like to do a Rick Jones tell-all. Scottie Young remarked really wanting to work with the Generation X character Chamber, now known as Decibel – a name that Young found distasteful, saying that the series was one of the comics that made him want to get into comic books. Parker stated he would love to work with Aquarius the Woodgod…

Brubaker then went on to calling the questioners Sawyer (Lost) type nicknames, skinny boy, hands in your pockets guy, etc. We were all surprised when Jen actually got Bendis on the phone. When asked what he was wearing, he said he wasn't wearing pants and was reading Criminal in the bathroom. The questioner took this golden opportunity to ask when Bendis was going to give a formal apology for making people made with his latest run of comics. Bendis quickly hung up.

The panel quickly derailed in to a Felicity (yes the TV show) panel, with Young espousing the wonders of the show and the rest of the panel nodding in agreement, or bewilderment, or both…I can’t tell, but that pretty much wrapped up the Mondo Marvel panel at Emerald City this year.
