Title:

DMZ

Content Rating:

DMZ is rated for mature audiences.

Summary:

DMZ tells the story of the second American civil war through the eyes of a young journalist, Matthew Roth. The DMZ is a demilitarized zone that exists in a tenuous situation, being threatened by the U.S. military, the Free States Army, rogue gangs, and the citizens themselves. What once was the island known as Manhattan, is now the DMZ.

In an alternate reality, militias in, “Middle America,” revolted against the established United States government. Many different forces worked within the militias and fighting broke out, starting the second American civil war. The militias moved to the coasts and ended up in New York City. A fragile and volatile treaty was negotiated, with the militias, now calling themselves the Free States Army’s, being contained in New Jersey and further inland. Manhattan is now a DMZ, owned by neither group, but feeling the aftermath of the war nevertheless.

The DMZ is home to some 400,000 people, mostly the poor and unwanted citizens that weren’t able to be evacuated. The DMZ has many different districts inside of it, some being controlled by roving gangs, concerned citizens, AWOL soldiers, and newly formed protectorates of like minded people. Life in the DMZ is hard, with medicine, food, water, and electricity worth their weight in gold. You never know when choppers will come in and level the area, or when a sniper has you in its sites.

Matthew “Matty” Roth is the son of a senator and is going against his father’s wishes to go into the DMZ with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Viktor Ferguson. Things are going well until his group comes under fire and their chopper is destroyed. Matty is the only living survivor and comes to rely upon a medic known as Zee. She takes him under her wing and shows him the real DMZ, giving him access to things only seen in his nightmares.

Matty decides to stay behind in the DMZ, doing news reports for the Liberty News. His journey into the DMZ shows him a side of life he never knew existed and becomes well known to the all sides of the conflict. Some try to use him as a pawn while others just want their story told to the outside world hoping that someday the fighting will stop and they will be able to live in peace.
