Emerald City Comic Con Journal - Webcomics Panel

Webcomics Panel

The Business of Webcomics Panel was an interesting one for me. I left with a bad taste in my mouth due to the amount of times I heard the word, “monetize.” I guess in hindsight, it makes sense that this was the focus of the panel, or maybe it’s my naive view of the webcomic world. I guess I always viewed these guys as in a different light than I do many comic book creators, imagining them lovingly creating their comics and being just tickled that anything they created made them enough money to live off of.

Instead I heard about revenue streams, monetizing content, and how you need to diversify your income to the point that not one part of your website makes more than forty percent of your overall income. Phew. I guess in a world where you can do just about anything to make money, there could be worse things. Coming from a fans perspective though, maybe I was best left in the dark.
