Emerald City Comic Con Journal - Breaking Into Comics

Breaking Into Comics Panel

Copyright Aaron Albert
The Breaking Into Comics Panel was an interesting one filled with warnings of danger and grueling work. Present were John Layman, Joan Hilty, Ford Gilmore, and David Baron.

The overall theme of this panel was blood, sweat, and tears. Most every person on the panel talked about the years of hard work they had to endure doing weird and menial tasks before they go their break into comic books. John Layman, writer of Scarface and Tek Jansen talked about how he had went to work at Wildstorm as an Editor three different times before he made the jump to writer. David Baron, colorist on 52 talked about how he had to work about seven years barely making ends meet by doing grunt work as a colorist before he got his name into comics. He had originally started out as a penciller and found that he was best suited for coloring instead.

Most of them talked about how self publishing was a good idea and a great way to get started. They also agreed that you just have to do it and get out there to get noticed. So get started!
