Also in attendance was The Hero Initiative. This organization was started to help those aging comic book creators that don’t benefit from the kind of money that is being thrown around at today’s comic book creators. Many of these artists and writers created some really popular comic book characters that are worth millions today, but they don’t see a dime. President Jim McLauchlin told me some touching stories such as one about an artist that was facing going blind, but was able to receive the surgery he needed because of The Hero Initiative.
The Hero Initiative had a great exhibit of some of today’s hottest artists doing Ultimate Spider-Man #100 covers. They auctioned off many of them at the con and raised over four thousand dollars. Another great event was when artist and writer Michael Avon Oeming arm wrestled people for $10 a shot and if they won, they got a piece of Powers art. Oeming went 40 out of 45 matches. Don’t make him mad people.
