Joe Field, owner of Flying Colors Comics in Concord, CA. It has since been adopted by comics distributor Diamond Comics.Free Comic Book Day - What Is It?:
Like it’s name implies, Free Comic Book Day is a day, typically the first Saturday of May, where comic book shops all over the United States give away free copies of comic books. Each year, publishers participate with special Free Comic Book Day version of one of their comic books to be handed out on this day. They are typically comics that help showcase what that publisher is all about, or will often be a sneak peek of an upcoming issue.
Free Comic Book Day is a great way to find some new comic books to read, especially from the small press and independent market. Rarely will you ever get to find free comics like this with the latest offerings form comic publishers.
Each store does the event differently so it is important to ask before you start grabbing comic books off the shelves. You can know a Free Comic Book Day issue because it will have the logo right under the title of the comic book. Some retailers only give away single issues, while others will have a bag of selected comics. You can also find some stores still that will allow you to take one of each that they offer. Again, it is good to call ahead.
Are They Really Free?:
They are supposed to be totally free to the customers. The store does pay for the comic books usually around 12-49 cents per copy so you should thank these stores for participating and handing out free comics!Location:
