Introduction

Who would have thought that the daily soap opera Guiding Light and Marvel would come together some day in a partnership that would cross over daytime television and the comic book world. Well that day has come to pass, and I must say I am not impressed. Bravely, I watched the episode of Guiding Light and have lived to tell the tale.

The Story

Young wife Harley Davidson Cooper lives in the town of Springfield and is the wife of her police officer partner and mother to two kids. On Halloween night, problems seem to be occurring with the electricity, and Harley goes to investigate some problems out side with the Halloween lights and is zapped by the electricity.

After being taken to the hospital and shocked again, Harley wakes up, her eyes glowing an eerie light blue and she seems none the worse. She soon discovers that somehow the electricity has charged her, giving her control over electricity, super speed, and other powers. She takes on the name of “Guiding Light” and becomes a superhero in Springfield, balancing being a hero, mother, and wife.

Trouble brews when her husband learns of her powers, forcing her to choose between fighting her archenemy, the Springfield Burns Blogger, and saving Springfield from crime, and living a normal life.

Review

For me, there were many things wrong with this “team-up.” According to the press release, "Joining forces with Marvel is such a natural fit for us because comic books and soap operas have so much in common," says Kreizman. "Both feature long-running characters and larger-than-life stories that appeal to a loyal and passionate fan base.” I guess I personally disagree with this as when thinking of the demographics of whom comics are geared towards and whom soap operas are geared towards. They seem to me to be two very different groups altogether.

Then there was the plot, acting, and special effects of the television show. No offense to those of you out there who like soap operas, but I think Marvel would have been better teaming up with something else. For an archenemy, a blogger does not come to mind. The costume reminded me of a “Birds of Prey” throwback and the special effects seemed no more than a few fireworks thrown together.

Conclusion

It was hard to sit through the entire show, but luckily I had Tivo and could pause for a breather. I guess for me, I felt Marvel could have worked to find a better fit for their effort.

If you get the chance and are looking for a high quality superhero match-up, then skip this if at all possible. If you’re looking for a quick laugh, then give it a go. You have been warned.
