Astro City Title Summary

By Aaron Albert, About.com

Title:

Astro City

Content Rating:

Astro City is a teen plus book.

Summary:

Astro City is a city filled with superheroes, villains, aliens, and ordinary civilians. Astro City is a city where the miraculous is commonplace and you can see all manner of amazing things every single day. The citizens of Astro City are constantly in danger, and know this, but the chance to live side by side with real superheroes every day seems to quell most peoples desire to move away.

There is no one hero that is the center of Astro City, rather, it is the city itself that is the centerpiece. The comic has had many different focuses, on heroes, villains, and the citizens of Astro City. Generally though, Astro City will focus on one subject at a time, sometimes being a one shot piece, but lately have started to tell different story arc’s that will last multiple comic books.

The true marvel of Astro City is the way in which the stories have been crafted. The comic, although filled with action, focuses more on the emotion of its characters, and how they react to living in Astro City. There is the Samaritan, who devotes every waking moment to fighting evil and saving lives, and only gets to enjoy flying in his dreams. There is Altar Boy, a young man who comes to Astro City to become a superhero and finds an unlikely mentor in The Confessor. There is also the story of Steeljack, who’s body of steel makes it difficult to exist as just an ordinary civilian, let alone trying to avoid the trappings of going back to his criminal background, but has to in order to save his friends and neighborhood.

Ultimately Astro City is a comic book about people, and weaves an interesting tale of life in this unlikely city.
