Iron Man 2 Blasts Its Way To The Top

War MachineIron Man 2 was the big winner this weekend, bringing in over $133 million dollars in the U.S. and another $194 million worldwide. It rose to the fifth highest grossing weekend of all time according to Box Office Mojo. I didn't worry so much about it making money as it has a great cast and had a huge push forward with the success of the first Iron Man film.

I was more worried that this film would fall prey to similar movies that came before it. Spider-Man 3, while very successful, fell far short of the previous two in terms of quality. I am happy to say that overall, Iron Man 2 was a very good film and handled the extra characters well. One of the things that I liked so much about the first film was how Favreau was true to the spirit of the Iron Man comic books, even bringing in many themes and stories from the comics, but modernized them with a new spin. I also heard that he brought in a think tank of current and past Iron Man comic writers to help with the overall storyline.

Favreau did much of the same here in the second film, staying true to the comics and giving them a fresh spin. While there were certain parts I wished were a bit different, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Again, it pays tribute to the characters of the Marvel Universe, but also tells its own story. Marvel is really amping up their movie franchise and so far they have been rocketing forward with success after success. I can only hope their plan for a crescendo in The Avengers movie does it as well.
