I saw this "motion comic" over at MTV put together by a Canadian synth-pop singer Lights and a couple of comic book artists. My first thought about the project was that here was yet another celebrity type person trying to cash in on the whole comic book thing and garner some buzz for her album. Some of the lines from the motion comic would suggest this such as the opening credits - "After the destruction of her home planet, Captain Lights, and a small band of audiophiles set out into the galaxy to collect and catalog the infinite audio of the universe in an effort to restore musical hope to the cosmos."
There were others that were a bit hokey as well, but in doing a little bit of research on her website, this girl definitely has some geek cred. One of her video blogs talks about her playing of video games such as Mortal Kombat VS DC Univese as an escape from her hectic schedule. A shot of her apartment reveals a collection of sci-fi ray gun toys where she shoots a giant Batman toy of of her kitchen counter for "epic loot". The coup de grace? Her WOW twin blade of the pheonix tattoo that takes up her entire forearm.
The production quality of the comic is nice and while the hokey lines would wear on me, I wouldn't mind seeing how this one pans out. It looks like this is a marketing tactic for her album, but it is also put together by someone who obviously has a passion for comics and pop-culture related material. Geeks continue to take their place in mainstream culture and that is something I'm glad to see.
