Kirby's Family Seeks Marvel Copyrights

Sunday September 27, 2009

Looks like the children of Jack Kirby are seeking to have the copyright of many Marvel characters returned to them through the U.S. Copyright Act. According to the site Deadline the biggest part of this is the lawyer behind the suit. Marc Toberoff has had a plethora of victories in copyright cases and looks to be the man when it comes to settling these copyright issues.

I can see the Marvel side of things, that they paid a fee to these creators and they knew what they were getting into. At the same time though, I see that these large companies are making huge profits from these creators and they are seeing nothing from it. There was little to no indication that comics and the subsequent tie ins would pay off so big. Anyway, things could really change come 2014 when the suit would seek to change back over the copyrights back to the Kirby family. In the end, I bet we will be looking at some kind of settlement and hopefully the Kirby family will get something back for all the hard work that Jack Kirby put into the comic book industry.
