Should Comics Be For Kids?

Monday June 22, 2009
I saw an article from the Charlotte Observer where a mom went to the library and bought some comics as part of a fund raiser, but was dismayed to find out that the comic she bought was full of naked people. She chose the comics based on their covers, looking for ones that weren’t to scary looking – ones that were "nice". The comic in question? Batman. Batman Confidential #18 to be precise.

You would think that people would know by now that comics aren’t just for kids anymore, but we keep running into people that think Spider-Man and Batman are just for kids…wait, that just sounds weird. Shouldn’t characters like Spider-Man and Batman be geared more for kids? I can understand it when a comic is created with adults in mind, something like Preacher or Y The Last Man, but these iconic characters have such a widespread audience and fanbase, what’s the motive behind this move for making these characters more adult themed? Money would be the obvious reason, but even the movie industry understands that they can’t push these characters to more than a PG-13 rating or they will lose a large part of the market. What do you think? Should these characters remain for kids or move into the modern age?
