First Look - Batman and Robin #1
I got a copy of the new Batman and Robin in the mail the other and finally got a chance to give it a perusal. I always have difficulty with change, especially in comics. The thought of another taking on the cape and cowl fills me with a certain amount of trepidation. I have to say though, that there was a lot that I liked in this relaunch. In a way, Morrison has brought the comic back to its roots. The tense relationship between Batman and Robin is renewed between Grayson and Damian, with Damian being full of anger and wanting to prove himself to Grayson, who is now taking on a parental role. The new Batcave, flying Batmobile (although I really don't like the design), and Grayson's own insecurities as Batman hark back to some of the themes seen in earlier Batman comics. I also enjoyed the art. I've liked a lot of Quietly's work, as it has a very unique look to it, but sometimes his characters have a tendency to blend together. I'm glad to say that he seems to be pushing himself, bringing his own style to the already identified characters of the DC Universe. I was pretty impressed.
I really hope this series comes out consistently, unlike that other Batman comic with the superstar creator lineup, as it has a lot of potential. I mean, deep down, I really want Bruce back in the drivers seat, but it should be a good ride until the day that happens.

Over the last few years three trends have conspired to damage the integrity, if you will, of the comic book medium: the over-hyped EVENT series, the proliferation of zombies, and the “death” of major characters. It was inevitable that someone would “kill” Bruce Wayne; just as it is inevitable that he will somehow reurn from the dead. Having said that the idea of replacing him with anyone, regardless of their legitimacy, is shameful. Hey, what if Superman ran around in long baggy shorts, wearing a back/wards baseball cap? No…..Let’s kill him. Shame on everyone involved with the death of BATMAN, regardless of how long it will take to resurrect him.
I haven’t cared for the idea of Bruce Wayne having a son from the beginning. The idea of this spoiled brat putting on the Robin costume (and we all know it will only be for a short time) is an insult to the previous wearers.
This is another reason not to buy the series.
I feel that no one can just pick up the cowl and be the Batman. The costume that each individual wears should be representation of their personality. If Bruce comes back, there most undoubtedly be a conflict. Damian is Robin. Tim is Red Robin, and he’s not going to revert to being Robin just because Bruce comes back.
I have to admit I’m a bit of a continuity freak myself. The idea of anyone else being Batman besides Wayne chaffs me a bit. But I also know that its completely out of my hands and I can look for things to gripe about or look for the silver lining of the story. Although I don’t like the concept of another taking on the cowl, Morrison does do a good job with what he has. Like I said, the thing I think I liked about this was that even though it was new characters in these roles, the themes were very much core Batman themes.
Great book!! great art…great story! I am loving Dick as Batman! Im not usually into Batman but this has brought me back!

the story is only as good as the writer who makes it. take a look at captain america. steve rogers died and was replaced by his former partner. the story worked because brubaker took good care of it. grant morrison did a good job reviving the dynamic duo in this first issue. as much as i love bruce wayne to be the batman again, i like the idea of dick taking over for the meantime. damien is a prick to say the least, but i love the way he plays as robin. he’s nothing like any robin i’ve seen. in fact he’s more like a young bruce wayne. he’s like a young batman eager to take over the helm of his father. this is a promising series. i do hope it keeps on getting better. with grant morrison, i don’t think that’s far from happening.
