My Favorite Comic Character

Sunday December 21, 2008
Most people have a character they identify with, a character they love above all others. For me, its Captain America. Mon Capitan was one of the first comics I started to collect, going through cheap comics bins and pulling out comics by the handful, most of which I still own. It's hard to truly pinpoint why I was so enamored with the character. Maybe it was how honest and pure he was, he is truly a hero in every situation. It could be his leadership skills I admired, seeing Cap yell, "Avengers Assemble!" and lead his team into battle. Or maybe it was the fact that Captain America's abilities came from within, he is the pinnacle of human perfection, but still wholly human.

Since those first days of collecting, I have not only collected his comics, but other parafanelia as well. I have a wonderful Alex Ross print of a recreation of Avengers #4, a Captain America jack-in-the-box, and even started to collect original art, with one piece from Captain America #384 being my favorite.

Captain America will always be on the top of my list in terms of characters I love. I mourned his death, and eagerly await his return. For me, Captain America is the best of the best and will be so for the rest of my life.

What about you? Which character is your favorite? I've thought about collecting answers and making a gallery of said characters. Post your answers below or email them to me at comicbooks.guide@about.com.

But wait… Captain America’s abilities came from a Super Soldier Serum provided by the government - not from within. He’s artificially augmented with chemicals, which is one of the classic comic book ways to gain superpowers artificially.

Sorry, but in terms of ‘human’, he’s in there with Green Lantern and Flash, who are ‘magic / science’ and ’science / magic’ respectively.

If you’re talking about ‘powers from within’, Batman & Green Arrow are some of the few examples you can cite. Captain America isn’t one of them.

Hey Shazam!

Thanks for the response. While I do agree with you that yes Captain America was augmented by the Super Soldier Serum, he wasn’t augmented to superhuman levels.

Captain America is the pinnacle of human physical perfection, but not above that. He is still human and to say his powers are on the level of Flash and Green Lantern seems off to me.

When I think of Captain America, the thing that stands out isn’t necessarily his ability to punch guys out, but to lead. He is a man who has honed his skills to be able to inspire courage and hope to all around him. His character makes people want to trust and follow him. Those are the things that to me, come within.

I think he fits quite well with characters like Batman and Green Arrow, who have trained themselves to a point that surpasses most human abilities.

I respectfully disagree.

My favorite character I’d have to say is Dr. Doom. Don’t know what it was that lured me from reading Archie comics to moving on to Marvels, but that’s what happened to me back in the 60’s. He’s a tragic character (by his own hand, admittedly), has cool armor and is brilliant. Dr. Doom single-handedly taught me more about how to use a dictionary and pick up more vocabulary than any other comic character out there LOL.

The other fave would be Wolverine. He was short, feisty and was completely different from any comic character I’d read about before. I’m pleased to say that both characters are still very special to me.

I have always been a big Colossus fan. He is a powerhouse and yet just never seem to get his due. I liked the fact that here was this powerful person yet he was artistic and caring toward his family and friends.

(5) Michael Farnsworth says:

My favorite comic charactor has always been the mighty THOR, long before Thor was popular I was a fan, when I was younger I didn’t see it but I had quit a bit in common with the son of Odin. I had an evil brother that was forever ploting against me, I was honest and would do what ever it took to help a friend in need, and felt I had to hide the true me from the world, I had a learning disability and had sweety hands and feet and was afraid of what people would say if they knew. Reading comics helped me over come my insecurity’s learn being different wasn’t a bad thing, it was an honorable thing and in time I learned to embrace who I was just as Thor had to learn to do.
A funny story When my son was little I would read him comics before bed, his favorite comic was Thor, he told me he liked Thor, unknown to me at the time he thought I was Thor years later he said it just made sense I was big and muscular I had long blonde hair and would leave for days at a time, I worked long hours and wouldn’t see him for days at a time. when me and his mother split up I gave him a dragon medallion and told him it was magic and would protect him from the dark. One day he asked me would it be a bad thing if he lost the medallion? and could I get another one in Asgard, that was when I found out what he had been thinking. He no longer thinks I’m Thor but he’s a big fan of the new series.

just read micheal farnsworth’s comments. my son and i are big fans of thor too.the split up was also somewhat like michael’s.
my son is little too young to understand all the archiac words in thor. but he just loves the thunder god and asgardians.

not many people in my country- sri lanka- read marvel/dc . the biggest problem is the non availability.
