I personally really like this trend. I hate paper and would rather get stuff electronically any day. Keeping track of a comic collection can be a lot of work and I don't ever have to worry about damaging them physically, although a computer crash would be the same as a home fire for a digital comic collection.
My biggest complaint with the digital downloading sites are two-fold right now. First is the monopoly effect that sites have. You have to go to specific sites that have licensing deals with comic publishers to get the comics you want. Marvel.com is the only place to legally download their comics and other sites only carry certain brands. There is no true digital comic book store where you can get whatever you want. Second is the price of these downloads. Sure, many are reasonable at only a buck or less, but many cost the same as the cover price. That's insane to me.
As more and more publishing companies seek to find ways to increase revenue, digital downloads seems to be a very smart choice. It is just one more way for companies to profit from their efforts. I just wish there would be a place where I could download all my comics and not go to jail for downloading them as well as getting them for a reasonable price.

Brian from Kidjutsu here. I agree that an iTunes for comics is absolutely what the comic book market needs, but it’s not going to happen. The comic book market is no longer healthy enough to justify the huge risks involved in building such a product. Not only does the technology have to be good, but you need high-profile deals to keep the momentum going. Drive Thru Comics by default is the best bet here, but they’ve been at it for a few years without much success. Maybe Marvel will open up the platform they are spending $10M over the next 2 years to build. I doubt it though.
With so many TV episodes free to watch on Hulu and Youtube and anime available on Crunchy Roll, does it even make sense to pay $1 for a comic that takes 10-15 minutes to read? Not enough bang for the buck. Maybe there’ll be a market for comics on the iPhone, which has proven to be a successful platform for micropayment. I’m still not sure if current iPhone market is big enough to justify all these players ploughing money into building an iPhone comic reader.
Just 2 cents from someone who once evaluated the iTunes for comics as a potential business model.
