Save The Superman House

Wednesday September 3, 2008
While author and comic book writer Brad Meltzer was doing research for a project, he decided to go to the place where Superman was created, a home in Cleveland where Jerry Siegel first came up with the idea for the man of steel. What he found appalled him. The house was falling apart with plaster coming off the walls and the home needing some serious upkeep. What should be a museum and monument to one of the greatest pop culture icons in American history was instead a dump. Hearing about this, a group of residents in the Cleveland area and some of comics finest creators have joined together to raise funds to take this home and preserve it. The group is called the Siegel and Schuster Society and they have a website set up at www.ordinarypeoplechangetheworld.com. There are many ways that one can help the cause, with some great t-shirts and items designed by Chip Kidd being a starter and you can also make a charitable donation to the project. The thing that will get most collectors excited are the auctions that the society have put together as they are quite astounding. From September 2nd through the 30th, you can bid on some choice pieces of comic history. Some of them are art, such as a one of a kind piece by Jim Lee featuring yourself and Superman side by side, or a fantastic piece by George Perez that was penciled and inked just for this group. Then there are some other interesting items such as being able to name a character in Greg Rucka's Stumptown, or to name the villain in Ed Brubaker's next creator owned project. Not enough for you? How about getting your name in Powers, a walk on role in the NBC series Heroes, or two tickets to The Colbert Report. There are a ton of great pieces out there so be sure to check out the Siegel and Schuster Society website. Their tagline is, "Be Ordinary," because ordinary people are truly the ones that change the world. Take a look and see if there is something you can help with for this great foundation. Thanks to guest reviewer Ben Sweetser for the tip.
