Boys Need To Read More Comics

Monday September 1, 2008
http://comicbooks.about.com/od/buyingcomics/tp/toptenkids.htmSaw this article over at Sunday Mail a UK site with an article about how comics helped the author get into reading and how he used this tactic on his son to expose him to classic literature in comic format. I know for me, comics played a huge role in my development as a reader - I had always been a big reader as a kid, and when I got turned onto comics in junior high, I tore into them voraciously, first raiding the five for a dollar bins at the local comic shop, then pumping my entire allowance into monthly comics. I was hooked, and comics helped build my vocabulary with words like telekinesis, mutant, esp, and others. I think what comics did for me the most though, was how it invaded my imagination. I spent countless hours daydreaming or turning my GI Joes into superheroes and making my own stories.

I also see this infection of comics in my students. Kids love to read comics. Granted, some of the students just look at the pictures, but others really get into the story and always ask me about who would win in a fight, or what I thought of a certain comic, or the differences between the comics and the movies. What about you? What did comic books do for you as a reader? Share your thoughts below.
