WOWIO Back Online

Sunday August 3, 2008
Seems comic book company Platinum Studios is still in choppy waters. They've had issues with creator payments, disgruntled employees, and have come under an enormous amount of scrutiny by Internet bloggers the world over. Their biggest problem has been their contracts, which are basically viewed as intellectual property farms to bring in ideas to market to other media. Their latest acquisition to come under scrutiny is WOWIO, a place to read ebooks, comics, and graphic novels for free. The original idea was for users to be able to read and download comics for free, but with advertisements. Now, you can still read them online for free, but to download them, you have to pay. Some of the comics are as much as $3.99, more than most comics on the stand. Comics Worth Reading talked to others about this, and got their input as well. In purusing the current stock, I noticed quite a mix of comic books. There are some new ones, such as Shon C. Bury's Nox, and some very old comics, such as a smattering of Blackhawk issues. The interface is pretty terrible, making it hard to read comics, and the quality is on the poor side. Missing does seem to be the ads that were in the issues themselves, but you do have Internet ads across the top. Platinum is saying they will expand the site, but some users are already looking to jump ship. Will this further damage Platinum's reputation? What say you? Post your comments below.
